About

Network of Networks

Greater Manchester Movement for Recovery: Christians together serving Greater Manchester (GM), has now been launched. This is a ‘network of networks’ involving churches, charities, businesses and individuals who want to make a difference and aid the recovery and renewal of GM. To move at pace GM Movement for Recovery is hosted as a legal entity by Greater Manchester Churches Together. It operates with freedom in decision making and financial matters.

Partnership

It is growing into a wide partnership of many groups and people such as:

  • Greater Manchester Churches Together
  • Denominations and church streams
  • Existing unity movements in Bolton, Salford, Oldham etc.
  • Individual churches
  • Charities and social enterprises
  • Informal pastors’ and prayer groups
  • Prayer networks
  • Mosaic network (networking key charities)
  • Sphere-based unity expressions in business, arts and others
  • Individual Christians who share the same vision
  • Private businesses

Structure

A light and simple structure is being created that can harness what is already working well and provide a network of networks where we can all play a part and create a more effective, strategic and coordinated delivery vehicle.

A full-time coordinator will be appointed to lead and support the organisation.

A steering group has been formed to oversee vision, values and strategy and is the main point of engagement with the mayor’s office.

An enabling team has been formed to help coordinate and deliver outcomes.

Borough Connectors

This wide partnership is not only to be expressed across GM but also within each borough. Borough Connectors have been identified to help form an expression of Movement for Recovery in Bolton, Bury, Salford, Oldham, Wigan, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Rochdale, Manchester. These borough expressions conducted an audit of what the Christian community delivered throughout Covid-lockdown and what it plans to continue to deliver.

Shared Missions

Working groups are being formed to facilitate specific aspects of delivery around the recovery and renewal of GM focusing on the shared missions launched by Andy Burnham:

  • Food Poverty
  • Homelessness and Housing
  • Wellbeing
  • Loneliness
  • Real Living Wage
  • Digital Inclusion
  • Climate Justice

We also identified some additional shared missions for GM to focus on:

  • School Readiness
  • Debt
  • Mental Health of Young People
  • Strategic Prayer
  • Refugees and Asylum Seeker

Financial Matters

Steps are being taken to raise the necessary money to support for the first year the full-time coordinator post, within the GM Christian community with an aim to raise finance from as many different sources as possible. This will underline the cooperative nature of the project.

It is hoped that by becoming ‘commission ready’ the Movement will be able to attract funds from trusts, grant-making bodies and from Greater Manchester civic authorities. Each borough expression of the Movement may also be able to attract funding within its own borough.

Any money raised will be funnelled down to individual churches and charities to support the work they are doing.

“MOVEMENT for RECOVERY is about working better together to get people into jobs, business back on its feet, improve food provision, getting people out of debt, supporting those with mental health challenges, providing friendship to the isolated and supporting our kids and young people.”
